Like many, I tend to focus my observations on the interesting ways in which people and societies differ, whether differences in culture, religious practices, languages or phenotypes. There’s no doubt that these peculiarities make us a fascinating human family.
Lately, however, I have dedicated an equal amount of mental energy considering the myriad common experiences and emotions that transcend the differences and bring humanity together, such as the love and compassion that binds families and friends, the economic hardships and obstacles, the commitment to improve life and resilience of communities, among many others. And I've concluded that list of common human experiences rivals that of the differences. The themes that I’ve long associated with my life experience in the American Midwest exist everywhere and anywhere.
Despite those who highlight differences in order to peddle divisiveness and instill fear and hate, I think that human nature is filled with compassion and love. I just hope that the majority of us spinning around on this rock together continue to believe this.
